THE CREATION

Ideas are real when they come into the physical world. In the ARTIST mind, those ideas already exist.

I was given the opportunity to participate in an Artist Residency at Alfred University thanks to my friend and colleague Peer Bode, Director of Electronics Arts Institute. This entailed full access to the University’s Electronic Art Studio consisting of the Institute’s IRIS Printer, computers and resources. This opportunity was partially funded graciously by the New York State Council on the Arts. It is indeed a valuable program, enabling the advancement of Digital Media Art. The proof of success are in witnessing the actual objects themselves, Printed on heavyweight Arches watercolor paper, the one-of-a kind original works measure 36” x 47”.

Examples of their preparation and execution can be found on these pages. In many ways, the enthusiasm is like watching a birth. They exist on screen like a sonogram, and then the maturation process takes place on the IRIS printer. It is exciting indeed to watch the creation unfold. Droplet by droplet, the printer puts down a tiny dot of ink. The Digital Age has changed the course of history and artistic expression for civilization for centuries to come. It will be interesting to see how technology will be used in the future and what advancement will take place.

Surely this was an almost impossible call to think we would be using computers to communicate. The days of seeing a writer holding a pencil are far and in between. Soon the paintbrush will go the same way. Paik predicted this 40+ years ago. Kids on laptops are a normal occurrence....but what will the future art look like? Did Bruegal know? I certainly did not know either while going to art school in my early teens. Fast forwarding 500 years later. It came to me at the age of 19 while taking art history classes at Buffalo University. It was there that I was introduced to Media Study/Buffalo run by visionary Gerald O’Grady and introduced to Nam June Paik. During my Artist Residency at Alfred University, I printed an image from “Day 1” which is now 34 years later. Incredible to see the old, right next to the new.

While Ferrari images represent the “NOW,” they have with their fabric, the foundations of origin that will never dissipate. As time goes on, “old” turns to “new.” Lost technology still workable; invigorate the creator and tantalizes the viewer. Both step away from the art feeling rejuvenated. Art should always give you hope. Another day well lived.
